“…You’re making it sound like a death sentence.”
“That was always a possibility for me.” He smiled and it reminded me of the first time I’d seen him smile as a kid. He’d always seemed so uncomfortable being happy, like he was just waiting for someone to come over and snatch it away.
And now, it was about to happen.
“Just tell me,” he looked me in the eye, searching for the truth, “that you’re going to take care of her, no matter what.”
